Letters That Explain Your Circumstances

We help put a specific request into writing: a letter for a landlord, a goodwill request about a past payment, or a hardship explanation to a creditor.

A practical place to begin.

Sometimes a useful next step is a clear explanation. We help organize what happened, what has changed, and what you are asking a creditor, landlord, or other recipient to consider.

  1. Explain the circumstances and what has changed.

Build a short, factual account of the circumstances. Include the details that help the recipient understand the request without sharing unnecessary personal information.

  2. State the adjustment or consideration you are requesting.

Make the request specific. A reader should be able to tell what you are asking them to review and what response would be helpful.

  3. For tenant support, explain the credit or debt work underway.

Where relevant, explain the steps you are taking and the records that support them. The letter should accurately describe your situation and avoid promises you cannot make.

A little preparation helps.

Think about who will receive the letter, what you want them to consider, and the dates or documents that help explain the situation.
